            SA DRAGONS ABREAST INC.

Paddling for Health, Hope and Harmony

Dragon boat racing for breast cancer survivors was initiated in Canada by Prof. Don MacKenzie in 1996 as a method of using strenuous upper body sport to help in rehabilitation after surgery and to help improve lymphatic function.

SA Dragons Abreast Inc was established in December 2001 to provide support, hope and inspiration to breast cancer survivors in South Australia.  We aim to put a face to breast cancer statistics and help raise awareness of the disease by providing the opportunity for survivors and their supporters to participate in the professional sport of dragon boat racing.

We are a member group of the Breast Cancer Network of Australia (BCNA) and a member of Dragon Boat SA (DBSA) under whose guidelines we compete along with twelve other affiliated clubs in South Australia.

Our founder was Carlene Butavicius, a member of BCNA, a woman with remarkable vision who played a key role in the formation of our club.

Since our incorporation, we have become the proud owners of three boats which we lease for use within Dragon Boat SA.

The need for a sports category to meet the needs of our members’ competitive nature and to accommodate the rapid growth of the club soon became apparent.

We have competed in all local competition as well as nationally and internationally, participating in regattas in Queensland, Rome, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Cape Town and Penang, winning many medals along the way.

It is the combination of both survivors and supporters training ‘as one’ which creates the background for our ongoing success.
