SA DRAGONS ABREAST 2008/9 SADA Members Club News http://www.sadanews.info
The 2008/9 has been a very successful year for SA Dragons Abreast. Training was intense in preparation for the National Titles being held in Queensland in April and fitness levels increased greatly. 50 members and friends traveled to Caloundra to contest this event. Whilst there were no team medals to bring home, our teams made it to the finals in four events which was a wonderful achievement considering the standard of competition. Seven of our members participated in the Super Grand Dragons (over 60's) demonstration races and came a very proud third each time. 10 of our paddlers trained and competed in the Nationals SA State team in several categories. The Grand Masters Women came away with silver whilst the Grand Masters Mixed and Open teams won bronze. Local competition within Dragon Boat SA proved interesting and many close races were contested in a regatta style contest during the season with our Grand Masters Women's 20’s team winning a silver and both the Master's Women's and Master's Mixed 10's winning bronze medals in the State Championships. Our club continues to sponsor a child in South Africa and to donate part proceeds from our fundraising events to cancer related organisations in South Australia. Members participate in the City to Bay Fun Run, the Relay for Life, the Mothers Day Classic Walk and through Breast Cancer Network Australia, support the Bakers Delight Pink Bun Campaign and the Mini Field of Women. Our fundraising calendar reflects our intention to continue to contest local, national and international regattas, with one of our goals this year being to raise some funds to take the team to the the Master Games in Mildura in August. Club members are invited on occasions to speak at functions arranged by the Adelaide social and business community. Through this exposure and with the support of Dragon Boat SA, we help to promote dragon boating as an exciting sport for our survivors and their supporters. |
